London Knowledge Quarter research and innovation dashboard

Our new dashboard analyses innovation and research activities in London’s Knowledge Quarter (KQ), highlights UCL’s contribution, and benchmarks KQ against other innovation districts.

KQ is a consortium of over 100 academic, cultural, research, scientific and media organisations based around London’s King’s Cross and focused on advancing and disseminating knowledge.

This new dashboard, developed in collaboration with Elsevier, benchmarks KQ against similar global innovation districts to identify patterns, strengths, challenges and opportunities. It also highlights the unique contributions that UCL knowledge has created and continues to create for KQ.

We hope the dashboard can be a valuable resource for other institutions with close links to innovation districts and foster a global dialogue on advancing science and business growth.

Key findings

KQ is a vibrant hub of research activity, with significant achievements in areas such as tackling infections, climate crisis, and sustainable cities.

Notably, KQ publications are frequently aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and have been influential in policy-related discussions.

These findings underscore KQ's commitment to addressing pressing global challenges through impactful research.

Further insights and key findings are summarised in a report by Elsevier (PDF).

Comparative insights

When compared to other international innovation districts, such as Kendall Square in Boston and the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, KQ consistently ranks highly across various indicators of research collaboration and impact.

For example, KQ does well in co-publication rates with local organisations, indicating a robust collaborative culture.

Additionally, KQ's focus on thematic areas like artificial intelligence and quantum technologies positions it as a competitive player in the global innovation landscape.

This comparative perspective not only highlights KQ's strengths but reveals opportunities for learning and collaboration with other districts, enhancing the overall effectiveness of research and innovation efforts.
