UCL Innovation & Enterprise

This free one-day workshop for UCL doctoral students and other early career researchers will focus on the fundamentals of developing an entrepreneurial mindset.

Even if you don’t have entrepreneurial ambitions, this workshop will help you reframe the skills you're developing during your time as an early career researcher.

It will help you heighten the impact of your research and think about future career paths.

UCL doctoral students will receive two DocSkills training points via InkPath and the Doctoral School when you complete this workshop.

Who it’s for

This workshop is for UCL:

  • doctoral and MRes students from any year and any discipline
  • postdoctoral researchers
  • early career research staff

You don't need any prior business experience to attend. You don't need to be an aspiring entrepreneur or already have a business idea.

What to expect

The workshop will be run online using Microsoft Teams.

The day will be very practical. You’ll be immersed in the journey of a hypothetical startup company. The day will be interspersed with breakout sessions, where you'll work in small groups to complete tasks and activities.

You'll be able to interact with the trainer and your fellow participants throughout the day, both verbally and via the group ‘chat box’.

You'll receive joining instructions, essential information, pre-workshop activities and a pre-event questionnaire approximately 24 hours before the start of the workshop.

What you'll learn

This workshop will help you:

  • start to recognise and use your enterprise skills
  • develop your own entrepreneurial thinking
  • generate and develop enterprising ideas using tools such as the business model canvas

By the end of the workshop, you'll be better able to:

  • develop ideas that create value and make a difference to others
  • identify the relationships needed with relevant stakeholders to move an idea forward more smoothly
  • produce a team presentation communicating a difficult message to stakeholders
