Overview

This free online workshop is designed for UCL doctoral students and other early career researchers who want to learn more in-depth features of building a new startup. 

There's a focus on the administrative and commercial aspects of getting an early stage startup off the ground.

UCL doctoral students will receive four DocSkills training points via InkPath and the Doctoral School when you complete the four sessions of this workshop.

This workshop is for UCL:

  • doctoral and MRes students from any year and any discipline
  • postdoctoral researchers
  • early career research staff

What to expect

This is a live online course taught over 4 afternoons (2pm to 5pm, Tuesday to Friday).

This workshop will help you:

  • navigate the challenge of starting a business with friends or strangers
  • understand basic business finance
  • learn how to assess the commercial value of intellectual property (IP)
  • develop your negotiation and influencing skills

What you'll learn

Company administration and financial planning for IP-rich startups

By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to:

  • build a startup profit and loss (P&L) in Excel, including developing sensible assumptions that underpin sales and revenue forecasts, and expenditure budgeting in line with a project roadmap
  • understand the different types of intellectual property (IP) that you might own, as well as how to protect and assess the commercial value of your IP
  • write term sheets that reflect company ownership terms and conditions, and investment financing agreements

Professional influence to aid conversations with investors, suppliers and other stakeholders

By the end of the workshop, you'll be able to:

  • prepare for productive conversations with key stakeholders, so you can move the goals of your enterprise forward
  • build commitment with those you work with, both within your team and outside, so that you can make your projects run more smoothly
  • communicate with your audience to get your message across and gain their support

About the tutors

Warrick Harniess, Managing Director, Scandinavia Stories

Warrick began his career at Pearson Education, where he built two online learning ventures for Pearson UK, managing startup budgets of around £2 million. He pioneered a digital marketing and customer service strategy that created Pearson UK social media accounts with the greatest customer reach, shares and interactions. Warrick also created a customer support programme that helped Pearson-Edexcel achieve Investors in People Silver status and the Institute of Customer Service’s ServiceMark standard.

Mario Moustras, CEO and Founder of Mazamo Coaching

Mario is a leadership and talent development coach who works with researchers and entrepreneurs. Before becoming a coach, Mario worked for the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC). He has a PhD in chemistry, and is a chartered scientist and Fellow of the RSC. Mario has worked with scientists and engineers across government agencies, industry and universities. He's led teams through science-related programmes in higher education, enterprise partnerships (especially with small companies) and technology policy.

Dates and times

This course will run from Tuesday, 14 December to Friday, 17 December 2021.

You'll need to attend from 2pm to 5pm each day.
