The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Junior Sargent Medal recognises a major contribution by an early career individual to research in the area of computer-aided product and process engineering.
Dr Charitopoulos has been selected as the winner of the 2026 Junior Sargent Medal for his contributions in the areas of optimisation under uncertainty and enterprise-wide optimisation. The research team that he is leading at UCL Chemical Engineering, develops cutting-edge methods for decision-making under uncertainty aiming to address challenging problems arising in the areas of: (i) sustainable energy & chemicals &, (ii) digitalisation of chemical & process supply chains operations, by hybridising machine learning and mathematical programming techniques.
Prof Eva Sorensen MBE FREng, Head of Department at UCL Chemical Engineering, had this to say:
“I am delighted to see Vassilis’ work recognised in this way. His selection as the 2026 Junior Sargent Medal recipient is a tremendous achievement and a testament to the originality, ambition, and impact of his research. His pioneering contributions to optimisation under uncertainty and enterprise-wide optimisation are shaping the future of computer aided process systems engineering. This recognition reflects both his exceptional talent and his growing influence in our field. I am immensely proud of his accomplishments.”
We congratulate Vassilis on this fantastic achievement.
