What kind of background do I need to apply for the programme?

We welcome applicants from a wide range of subject backgrounds. Although there are no subject-specific requirements for the programme, at least two of your A Levels should be from UCL’s list of preferred A Level subjects. 

We believe that a diverse student cohort leads to the most interesting debates and discussion – and that a diversity of voices and experience is needed to develop truly inclusive and sustainable solutions to global issues. All we ask is that you are interested in, and willing to engage with, ideas from science, engineering and technology. 

Do I need a mathematics qualification to apply?

No, you do not need to have previously studied mathematics at A Level (or international equivalent) to apply.

How much technical knowledge will I gain from this programme?

Over the course of the programme, you will study a broad range of topics from engineering, social and political perspectives. These include policy design, project management, innovation, engineering design and infrastructure development. Our interdisciplinary approach will equip you with the knowledge, research, analytical and management skills to create practical solutions to global challenges for current and future generations. 

The programme does not aim to replace traditional science, engineering or mathematics degrees, such as Civil Engineering. You will, however, use relevant literature and learning tools from these topics to develop your understanding of how engineering expertise is used in policy making, and importantly, how this knowledge can be used to create inclusive and prosperous societies.  

Why should I choose to study within UCL's Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP)?

Our department was founded with the understanding that science, technology and engineering expertise is vital to tackling today’s most pressing global challenges, from energy access to congested cities. We are unashamedly interdisciplinary and the only science and policy department in the UK that is situated in an engineering faculty, which gives us a unique setting and intellectual approach to our research. Our academic staff are established experts and policy-practitioners, who have first-hand experience into how technological and engineering innovation interacts with the world of policymaking.

How do I apply?

To apply for this programme, you need to submit an application via UCAS (UCAS code: B191).

What do you look for in a personal statement?

We recognise you may not be able to write a personal statement that reflects your interest in this programme and that addresses your other UCAS choices. This will not adversely affect your application. You should use your personal statement to demonstrate your ability to use and reflect on diverse information sources; an interest in helping societies develop a better quality of life for all; and an interest in combining technical and sociological knowledge to solve pressing global issues.

Where will I be based?

The Science and Engineering for Social Change BSc is based at UCL East. Should any modules be delivered at our Bloomsbury campus, these will be clearly marked.

Will I have access to the facilities at UCL Bloomsbury campus?

Yes, you are welcome to use the facilities and services on our Bloomsbury campus.
