STEaPP Policy Engagement
Central to STEaPP’s mission is a commitment to knowledge exchange and policy engagement between researchers, students and policy stakeholders.
Our work bridges the gap between science, technology, and public policy, ensuring that research informs real-world decision-making and that policymakers have access to the latest evidence-based insights.
Below, you can explore some of the current projects we are working on.
The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee is launched an inquiry into the role of science diplomacy and research and development in supporting the UK Government’s growth missions, enhancing the UK’s international influence, and contributing to national security. STEaPP possesses leading expertise in science diplomacy research and has an extensive network of international collaborative partnerships which provide valuable insight into the benefits and challenges of cross-border scientific partnerships.
Investigating the Role of Energy Systems in Sustainable Development - STEaPP Submission
The International Development Committee launched an open call for potential topics of inquiry in the area of international relief and development. This proposal suggests that the International Development Committee (IDC) investigate the role of energy systems in sustainable development, based on research from UCL's Department of Science, Technology, Engineering and Public Policy (STEaPP). The focus is on how energy infrastructure can support sustainable development goals (SDGs), especially in low-income countries, and the actions the UK Government can take to enhance its international aid functions.
The Technology Adoption Review represents a critical opportunity to understand and dismantle the barriers hindering the widespread adoption of transformative technologies within the UK. As a department that sits at the intersection of academia, industry, and policy, STEaPP is uniquely positioned to provide valuable insights into the factors that facilitate or impede technology adoption.
Soft power: a strategy for UK success?
This inquiry will explore the extent and effectiveness of the UK’s soft power in what is an increasingly challenging global environment. The inquiry will consider the UK’s unique soft power strengths and ask how the UK might best measure and actualise the benefits it accrues from its soft power. As a Department that mobilises science, technology, engineering and public policy expertise, STEaPP is uniquely positioned to provide valuable insights into how the UK’s soft power can be realised through science diplomacy and excellence in science, innovation and technology.
The Environmental Audit Committee launched an open call for potential topics of inquiry in the areas of climate change, the environment and nature, inviting proposals on what the Committee should investigate and why. STEaPP submitted a response on embedding Indigenous rights into UK climate policy and supply chain due diligence regulation.
European framework for science diplomacy
The aim of this consultation is to gather evidence from relevant science diplomacy stakeholders (such as government, academia, industry and civil society) to inform the scope and objectives of a future European framework for science diplomacy. STEaPP’s submission highlights the importance of science diplomacy at a European level, noting the need for strategic policy on science diplomacy to support state-led initiatives, the role that academic institutions play in supporting science diplomacy processes and how it can be used to demonstrate European leadership and smart power.
