Project description: This project aims at a paradigm shift towards sustainable 6G communications through new physical layer waveform theory development with practically oriented intelligence. The energy saving of this proposed work will be enabled using cutting- edge advances in waveform design, signal processing, artificial intelligence, and will be extensively validated using experimental measurements, by departing from traditional approaches via simple software and hardware upgrade. This project will employ the following approaches: (a) explore new physical layer waveform design methodologies leading to higher power saving ratios beyond the traditional 20% saving limit. (b) pursue a co-design methodology of waveform and artificial intelligence (AI) such that an AI model can be tailored to fine tune derived waveforms or create new waveforms for further power saving. (c) tune physical layer waveforms to simplify AI model complexity in communications. (d) design and implement standard-compatible waveforms with low-complexity and interpretable AI features in hardware to validate the power saving capability in the real world.
