Recently, representatives from UCL’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering undertook a strategic visit to Singapore and Indonesia to deepen international collaboration and explore new opportunities in research, enterprise, and student engagement.
In Indonesia, Dr Rob Thompson and Dr Clive Poole met with leading academic institutions, government bodies, and industry partners, including BINUS University, Telkom Indonesia, Bandung Institute of Technology, and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). They were also warmly welcomed by representatives from the West Java Provincial Government, the Ministry of Communication and Digital, and the British Council and Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). The visit was an opportunity to showcase UCL’s research excellence and strengthen links with key stakeholders across education, policy and innovation sectors.
In addition to academic and governmental engagements, the team hosted a well-attended alumni event in Jakarta, reconnecting with UCL graduates from the region, many of whom are now in influential positions across industry and government.
Prior to the Indonesia leg, the visit also included meetings in Singapore with NING Research, a leader in computational fluid dynamics and numerical simulation consulting, to discuss potential enterprise collaborations. The team also met representatives from NanoMalaysia, the country’s national agency for nanotechnology commercialisation, exploring shared interests in innovation, industry engagement and professional development.
This trip was a fantastic opportunity to build on UCL's existing strengths in the region. We were inspired by the level of innovation, openness to collaboration, and shared ambition for impact. The conversations we had across academia, industry, and government highlighted exciting pathways for future engagement, both in research and enterprise.
The visit marked a successful step forward in UCL’s global engagement efforts, underlining the department’s commitment to nurturing impactful, long-term partnerships in Southeast Asia.
