Professor Zhang is Co-Director of the Hawkes Institute (formerly the UCL Centre for Medical Image Computing). He also directed the UCL EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent, Integrated Imaging in Healthcare. Professor Zhang is internationally recognised for his contributions to medical imaging.
As part of the Vice Dean (Health) position, Professor Zhang will also take on the role of Director for the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering (IHE). The IHE brings together and showcases the work of researchers from across the Faculty of Engineering’s ten departments, enabling interdisciplinary collaboration and external engagement.
Professor Zhang will guide the IHE’s strategic vision, working closing with the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, UCL’s health leadership, and partners across the NHS, industry and government.
He will oversee programmes that strengthen UCL’s position as a world leader in healthcare engineering, support the translation of research into real-world impact, and champion an interdisciplinary community spanning engineering, medicine, computer science, and the life sciences.
Professor Zhang said, “I am honoured to take on the Vice Dean (Health) role and Director of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering at such a pivotal moment for UCL, with the launch of the new UCL Health Vision and the growing impact of engineering and data science within healthcare”.
“I would like to thank my predecessor Professor Qasim Rafiq for his outstanding leadership and laying the foundations for the IHE’s next chapter. I am also grateful to the IHE core team – Luís Lacerda, Ferdouse Akhter, and Alice Hardy – for ensuring a smooth transition.
“Our community brings together exceptional talent and expertise across disciplines, and I’m looking forward to driving work that delivers meaningful impact for patients and society”.
