The visit welcomed Intel’s newly appointed Vice President for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Giselle Ruiz Lanza, and UK & Northern Europe General Manager Simon Wilyman, who met with students and academics to explore projects developed through the department’s Industry Exchange Network (IXN).
The demonstrations showcased how the latest generation of Intel AI PCs can run AI applications directly on a computer, rather than relying on cloud computing. By processing data locally, these systems can improve privacy, reduce delays and make AI tools more efficient, particularly where sensitive information is involved.
AI to support healthcare
Among the projects presented was Ambient Scribe Technologies, a series of AI tools being developed in collaboration with the NHS under the leadership of Dr Atia Rafiq, Costas Stylianou and colleagues.
The technology is designed to help clinicians by automatically generating medical notes and summaries from conversations with patients. It can also support multilingual consultations and produce information tailored to different reading levels.
Running the AI directly on the device means sensitive patient information can remain on the computer, rather than being processed in the cloud.
Dr Atia Rafiq said: “One of the greatest strengths of the Industry Exchange Network is that students work on genuine challenges alongside industry and public sector partners. Seeing them present solutions with the potential to improve healthcare directly to Intel’s leadership shows what can be achieved when education, research and industry come together. It also demonstrates how the latest generation of AI PCs can support practical applications while helping to keep sensitive data secure.”
Expanding accessibility through gaming
The delegation also met the team behind MotionInput Games, a UCL Computer Science spinout developing touch-free ways for people to interact with games and other software.
The team demonstrated MotionInput PINCH!, an AI-powered platform that allows users to control games using hand gestures, facial expressions and full-body movements instead of a traditional controller.
Designed to make gaming more accessible for people who cannot use conventional input devices, the technology also opens up new ways for everyone to interact with digital experiences.
During the visit, undergraduate student Sofia Saronne demonstrated the latest version of the platform, inviting Intel’s visitors to play a popular commercial game using only touch-free controls, without requiring any modifications to the game itself.
Preparing students for industry
The visit highlighted the role of the IXN in providing students with opportunities to work on real industry challenges while gaining experience with emerging AI technologies.
By bringing together students, researchers and industry partners, IXN helps students apply their knowledge to practical projects, develop valuable professional experience and prepare for careers in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
