Researchers from the Bioelectronics Group, led by Professor Andreas Demosthenous, received five awards at the 2026 IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS 2026), including the Darlington Best Paper Award, Best Demo Award, a Pre-Doctoral Grant, a Student Travel Grant, and the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Global Chapter of the Year Award.
ISCAS is the flagship conference of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and one of the leading international forums for research in circuits and systems. The awards reflect the breadth of the group’s contributions, spanning research excellence, innovation, student development, and service to the global IEEE Circuits and Systems community.
Darlington Best Paper Award
The Darlington Award, named after circuit theorist Sidney Darlington, recognises the best paper published in IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems – Part I or IEEE Open Journal of Circuits and Systems over the preceding three years. It is one of the highest honours in the field of circuits and systems.
Dr Yaohua Zhang, Dr Dai Jiang, and Professor Andreas Demosthenous received the 2026 Darlington Best Paper Award for their paper “A High-Voltage Differential SPDT T/R Switch for Ultrasound Systems”. The work presents a novel switch circuit for biomedical ultrasound systems using piezoelectric micromachined ultrasonic transducers.

Dr Zhang also received a Student Travel Grant to attend ISCAS 2026 and accept the award in person.

Best Demo Award
PhD students Jiaxing Zhang and Tianyang Yao, together with their supervisors Prof. Andreas Demosthenous and Dr Dai Jiang, received the ISCAS 2026 Best Demo Award for “Semi-Static Magnetic Field Localisation System for Wireless Power Transfer”. The system demonstrates real-time 5-degree-of-freedom receiver localisation using a transmitter coil array and a Monte Carlo-based positioning algorithm. Interactive demonstrations, including a whack-a-mole game and a space docking simulation, were used to illustrate the system’s capabilities.
We are delighted that our work was recognised among many strong demonstrations. ISCAS 2026 was a valuable opportunity to share our research and engage with the international community.”
Pre-Doctoral Grant
PhD student Tianyang Yao received a Pre-Doctoral Grant in recognition of outstanding early-stage research potential. Up to ten such grants are awarded globally each year by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.

IEEE CAS Society Global Chapter of the Year Award
Professor Andreas Demosthenous, Chair of the IEEE United Kingdom and Ireland Section Circuits and Systems Chapter, received the 2026 IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Global Chapter of the Year Award. The award recognises the Chapter’s activities in technical engagement, event organisation, and contributions to the global IEEE Circuits and Systems community.
