Students from across London came together this summer for the 2026 Computer Science Summer School, taking part in a week of hands-on activities designed to showcase the breadth, creativity and real-world impact of computer science.
Throughout the programme, participants developed practical skills in problem solving, teamwork and critical thinking while exploring how computing can be used to address challenges across society. Workshops encouraged students to think like researchers, engineers and designers, applying computational thinking to a wide range of scenarios.
Exploring the breadth of computer science
Artificial intelligence and machine learning sessions introduced students to the exciting potential of intelligent systems, while also encouraging them to consider the importance of ethics, fairness and responsible innovation. Creative coding workshops demonstrated how programming can be used as a tool for artistic expression, with students designing interactive digital experiences and experimenting with generative design.
Students also investigated environmental data, using visualisation, modelling and simulation to explore how computing can support evidence-based decision making in conservation and sustainability. In human-computer interaction workshops, they learned how thoughtful design can create accessible, intuitive technologies that put users at the centre of the development process.
Putting computing into practice
Alongside these themes, participants gained practical experience through Arduino programming projects, including traffic light systems and rain prediction prototypes, explored the mathematics of graph theory, and strengthened their preparation for university through personal statement guidance and entrance exam workshops.
The Summer School highlighted the diversity of modern computer science, demonstrating that the subject extends far beyond programming alone. By combining technical knowledge with creativity, communication and analytical thinking, students gained valuable insight into the many pathways available within the discipline.
The outreach team and student ambassadors were always there to offer guidance, answer questions and help us get the most from each activity. It was a really enjoyable and inspiring experience, and I now have a much better understanding of the opportunities available within computer science.
Preparing for university
The 2026 Computer Science Summer School provided an inspiring introduction to university-level computing, equipping participants with new skills, greater confidence and a deeper appreciation of how computer science can be used to make a positive impact in the world.
