Professor Dame Polina Bayvel DBE FREng FRS, Head of the Optical Networks Group at UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering, has been named in the Royal Academy of Engineering’s 50 for 50 list, marking the Academy’s 50th anniversary.
The list recognises 50 people whose innovation has helped tackle some of humanity’s greatest challenges, and forms part of a commemorative photo series celebrating the milestone.
Professor Bayvel was selected for her defining role in advancing high-capacity optical networks, which underpin the internet, AI and global communications infrastructure. She founded and leads UCL’s Optical Networks Group, where her research has transformed how data is transmitted over optical fibre networks. She was among the first to demonstrate the use of the wavelength domain in routing optical signals, an innovation that remains central to how these systems are designed today.
Her career spans both academia and industry, including early roles designing submarine and landline networks with STC Submarine Systems and Nortel. She has authored more than 500 research papers and received numerous international honours, including the Royal Society’s Rumford Medal, the Institute of Physics’ Thomas Young Medal and the Humboldt Foundation Research Award.
Professor Bayvel was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2002, and was appointed a Dame in 2026 for services to engineering and optical communications, having previously been appointed CBE in 2017.
The Academy has been invaluable to the Optical Networks Group for many decades. Professor Robert Killey, also of the group, was elected Fellow in 2023, and several of its researchers have received RAEng fellowships enabling them to lead their own research groups within the department.
