The event provided an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with members of the alumni community in Korea, including the Korea Alumni Club, and to hear from UCL colleagues about the ever-growing partnerships between UCL and Korea.
More than 50 alumni from across Korea, whose graduation years spanned from 1993 to 2025, gathered to network and share stories on how their UCL experience has shaped their journey so far. Those alumni now have successful careers in a wide range of fields, from university professors to architects to entrepreneurs.
Attendees met with senior leaders from the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, the Office of the Vice Provost (Advancement) and UCL Innovation & Enterprise.
Alumni heard from Professor Andy Nisbet, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Sciences, about the upcoming series of celebratory events to acknowledge the 200th anniversary of UCL, many of whom will be delivered virtual or hybrid to allow for members of the UCL community to join from all around the world.
Professor Tao Cheng, Vice-Dean International (Faculty of Engineering Sciences), outlined the many collaborations between UCL and Korean partner universities on research and development ranging from astrophysics to electrical and electronic engineering.
Dr Robert Thompson, Vice-Dean Enterprise (Faculty of Engineering Sciences), spoke about the recent launch of the GITCC partnership, as well as ongoing partnerships with industry leaders in Korea.
It was a wonderful gathering in the golden autumn of Seoul. The alumni were highly engaged and asked many thoughtful questions. It was a pleasure to meet alumni, including my former students, and to explore exciting collaboration opportunities across disciplines.
This event marks an important step in deepening UCL Engineering’s ties with Korea and creating new opportunities for collaboration across research, enterprise, and the alumni community.
This alumni reception formed part of a wider programme of strategic meetings in Seoul as part of the launch of the Global Industrial Technology Cooperation Centre (GITCC). The GITCC aims to drive innovation through partnerships between UCL and leading Korean industries in advanced technology sectors.
