We’ve refreshed our strategic vision and refined our thematic priorities.
The UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering (IHE) exists to amplify, connect and catalyse healthcare engineering innovation across UCL Engineering and beyond. As a virtual institute, we bring together and showcase the work of researchers from across the Faculty of Engineering's ten departments, enabling interdisciplinary collaboration and external engagement.
We act as the central hub for healthcare engineering at UCL, connecting academics with clinical, industrial and policy partners to align research with real-world health needs. By fostering these synergies, we aim to accelerate the translation and adoption of healthcare innovations.
Our strategic aims
- Amplify healthcare engineering research excellence
- Connect researchers and enable new collaborations between groups that would not typically work together
- Catalyse stratetic research activity and impact
Our new thematic application areas
To better reflect the diversity and excellence of healthcare engineering research across UCL, the IHE has identified and adopted thematic application areas and five cross-cutting capabilities:
- Precision MedTech Innovation: Advancing medical technologies to develop innovative devices and solutions that enhance diagnostics, treatment, and patient care.
- Advanced Medical Imaging: Utilising cutting-edge imaging technologiesand computational methods to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of diagnostics and interventions.
- Future Digital Healthcare: Integrating digital technologies to revolutionise healthcare delivery, improve outcomes, and enable personalised, data-driven medicine.
Next-Generation Therapeutics: Pioneering the production and delivery of
pharmaceuticals and biologics for high-quality, personalised medical treatments.
- Quantum Healthcare Technologies: Harnessing quantum technologies for transformative diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities.
These themes are underpinned by cross-cutting capabilities, which include:
- Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
- Data Science & Big Data Analytics
- Robotics & Automation
- Sustainability
- Ethics, Regulatory Science & Policy
The IHE plays a unique, Faculty-funded role as a strategic enabler and catalyst. Our remit spans the full spectrum and breadth of healthcare engineering, from biomaterials and medical devices to imaging, digital health, AI, advanced therapeutics, and biomanufacturing platforms. We are uniquely positioned to look across the landscape, foster interdisciplinary collaboration, and connect researchers with clinical, industrial, and policy partners.
