The Photonics Society in EEE has recently been founded with a dual purpose: to establish a dedicated platform for researchers at UCL to exchange ideas and collaborate on interdisciplinary projects and to organise outreach events that introduce students to the dynamic fields of optics and photonics. This initiative not only supports academic inquiry but also highlights the extensive career opportunities within these areas.
A key aspect of the society is its affiliation as a UCL-recognised society and an Optica Student Chapter. This unique structure brings together financial backing from Optica and a suite of member benefits, including access to peer-reviewed journals, networking events, and career resources. By bridging academic excellence with professional development, the society distinguishes itself within the optics community.
The founding vision has beendriven by the need for greater interaction among UCL’s optics and photonics community, aiming to break down silos and promote knowledge sharing. The initiative’s momentum was sparked by the proactive efforts of its founder, Farah Comis. After completing an MEng in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from UCL, she joined the University of Cambridge and UCL Centre for Doctoral Training in Connected Electronic and Photonic Systems in September 2020. Currently, Farah is engaged in cutting-edge research on integrated photonics, particularly in lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) platforms, under the guidance of Dr Alfonso Ruocco.
Looking ahead, the Society has already rolled out a series of events at the end of 2024, with plans to continue throughout 2025. Members can look forward to social gatherings that foster discussion and debate over shared interests in photonics, as well as Transferable Skills Workshops featuring industry experts. Additionally, future projects include Industry Talks, Photonics Labs, and a Research Hackathon, all designed to further collaborative learning and innovation.
Open to both novices and seasoned experts, the society’s events cater to all levels of expertise. Whether you're looking to grasp the fundamentals or deepen your knowledge through hands-on projects and mentorship, there is a role for you. Beyond attending events, members are encouraged to contribute actively - whether by volunteering, organising workshops, or taking part in collaborative projects - emphasising the belief that teaching and shared learning are key drivers of innovation.
Collaboration remains at the core of the Photonics Society’s mission. By inviting partnerships with other UCL societies and departments, the society hopes to leverage diverse perspectives to create richer, more useful events. Prospective collaborators and interested students are warmly encouraged to reach out with ideas and to join this dynamic community, committed to enhancing UCL’s impact in the ever-evolving world of optics and photonics.
