Today we remember the 52 people who lost their lives, and more than 770 who were injured, when three London Underground trains and a bus were targeted in a bombing attack on London.
One of the victims was Gladys Wundowa, who at that time worked as a cleaner in the UCL Department of Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering. Gladys had been at UCL for 16 years, and was a well-known, well-respected and friendly face in Civil Engineering and the various other departments where she had also worked.
In 2006, an Indian Bean tree was planted in the UCL Quad in Gladys’ memory, alongside a memorial plaque. Access is currently restricted whilst the Bicentennial Legacy Works in the Quad take place, but the tree is being carefully protected throughout the works and, once the works are completed, will be available to visit and view as usual.
