We are proud to announce that the 2024 Festival of Engineering has received national recognition at the 34th Annual HEIST Awards, winning the prestigious title of Best Widening Participation Initiative of the Year.
The HEIST Awards, now in their 34th year, celebrate excellence and innovation in education marketing and engagement. Winning in the category of Best Widening Participation Initiative highlights the Festival’s role in promoting inclusive public engagement and inspiring the next generation of engineers. This achievement recognises the exceptional impact of the six-day festival, which took place across six London boroughs and 53 locations, attracting over 7,000 attendees. The Festival was co-created with schools, community groups, and national partners, and delivered by 364 staff and student volunteers. It offered a diverse programme of activities, including hands-on experiences, lab tours, and a live link to the International Space Station—helping thousands of young people, many from underrepresented backgrounds, to see themselves in engineering.
"Truly inspiring!” and “An outstanding initiative and achievement."
This recognition reflects the creativity, commitment, and collaboration of all those involved. Our Department had strong representation throughout the Festival, with contributions from multiple research groups participating in the Industry Showcase and staff members actively hosting and supporting events. Notable contributions came from Derek Hill, Charlotte Maughan Jones, Terence Leung, and Public Engagement Manager, Simon Watt, whose involvement helped bring the department’s work to life for public audiences.
