Associate Professor Francesca Boem has published an article in Business Reporter, in collaboration with the IEEE, titled "IoT Devices: Are They Secure?". The piece highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity as smart, interconnected devices become embedded in critical infrastructures.
The article examines vulnerabilities in two high-impact domains: energy systems and healthcare. It explores how IoT technologies, while driving efficiency, personalisation and remote access, also introduce new risks. From smart meters and EV chargers to wearable medical devices, compromised data or weak security protocols could result in physical consequences ranging from blackouts to serious health threats.
Francesca's work in UCL EEE focuses on system-level approaches to cyber-physical security. As the article argues, ensuring future resilience requires interdisciplinary thinking, bringing together engineers, system designers, and domain experts to address risks from design through to deployment.
