The Department of Chemical Engineering at UCL is extremely proud of our students: Greg DSilva, Joan Tang, Shaun Tan, Saranya Saravanan and Dhilan Patel, who worked together as a team (Proplant Solutions) to put together an entry for the 2023/24 Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) Macnab-Lacey award and won the prize. The Macnab-Lacey Prize is awarded to the chemical engineering undergraduate student design project team whose design project submission best shows how chemical engineering practice can contribute to a more sustainable world.
The team’s entry was based on their third-year capstone design project entitled: Sustainable Production of Bisphenol-A from Cumene in Kashima, Japan. Their entry combined work from different deliverables on the capstone design project, with an emphasis on key areas such as: addressing key sustainability development goals (SDGs), highlighting how their work feeds into achieving the 2050 net zero target, gate-to-gate life cycle assessment (LCA), heat integration of the process and safety studies.
The IChemE in their congratulatory letter to the team remarked that “…The team’s project on Bisphenol-A production has showcased the impact of chemical engineering design on sustainable production, winning you this prize.” There is no doubt that this feat was achieved through the hard work, creativity and innovation demonstrated by the students in their design project.
