The Bioelectronics Group led by Prof Andreas Demosthenous performed brilliantly at the recent IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS), in May held in Singapore.
PhD student, Yaohua Zhang was awarded the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society Pre-doctoral Grant which recognises young IEEE members enrolled in a PhD programme in a field related to the Circuits and Systems Society. Up to ten grants are given out annually worldwide.
I am very honoured to be selected for this Grant, which provides USD 2500 to conduct interdisciplinary research at another academic institution. The Grant also provides compensation of up to USD 1000 to travel to an IEEE CASS flagship conference. I plan to use the funding from this Grant to visit a research group at the Delft University of Technology to work on ASIC design for the next generation of biomedical ultrasound applications."
Additionally, Yaohua Zhang and Jiaxing Zhang were awarded second place in the ‘Best Live Demo Prize’ category for their work entitled “A Wearable Eight-Channel A-Mode Ultrasound System for Hand Gesture Recognition and Interactive Gaming”.
The system consists of a forearm strap that utilises ultrasound to detect forearm muscular morphology during hand motion, whilst a bespoke machine learning algorithm on a laptop decodes the reflected ultrasound signal to control a Pac-Man game in real-time. This work has been carried out with project partners from Imperial College London and the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering, as part of the EU Horizon-2020 project SOMA.
ISCAS is a flagship event organised by the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society, with over 1400 participants in attendance. This year’s ISCAS also marked the 75th anniversary of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society.
ISCAS 2025 will be hosted in London from May 25 – 28, 2025, co-chaired by Prof Andreas Demosthenous.
