Outreach with primary school children through the Royal Society Partnership Grant

Since January 2023, Medical Physics Research Fellow, Dr Charlotte Maughan Jones, has been delivering fortnightly outreach sessions at St Peter’s Primary School in Folkestone, in which she ran hands-on experiments involving light.

These interactive sessions were run across the school, from reception age (4-5 years old) all the way up to year 6 (11 years old) and involved investigating whether light travels in a straight line, learning how shadows are made, creating rainbows, making a blue sky and sunset in a jar and learning about the importance of UV light and sun safety (whilst having fun and making things glow!).

This outreach programme was funded by a Royal Society Partnership Grant which allowed the school to purchase brand new science equipment they wouldn’t have otherwise had the budget for.

Charlotte commented:

“It has been an incredibly worthwhile experience, and I would highly recommend anyone thinking about running their own outreach programme to partner with a school and put in an application – the current application round is open now!”
