A paper, “Optical Fibre Capacity Optimisation via Continuous Bandwidth Amplification and Geometric Shaping” authored by members of the Optical Networks Group, both current and former, in collaboration with Xtera (UK & US) and KDDI Research (Japan), will be presented with the award at the annual IEEE Photonics Conference (IPC) on Monday, November 14, 7:00 pm.
On receiving the award, Professor Polina Bayvel, head of the Optical Networks Group commented:
It is an honour and privilege to receive this award – a testament to the enthusiasm, great ideas and hard work of the Optical Networks Group researchers and our industrial collaborators. This is a very competitive and fast-moving research area, and we are happy to have made a mark in the continuing quest to maximise the intelligence and transmission throughput of optical fibre communications systems. These systems are a key part of the global digital infrastructure and carry, route and process the vast majority of all digital data.
The research was carried under the TRANSNET (Transforming networks – building an intelligent optical infrastructure) Programme Grant funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
The IEEE Photonics Technology Letters Best Paper Award is awarded to the paper considered the best among the papers published in the IEEE Photonics Technology Letters during the previous three calendar years. Reviewed by the PTL selection committee, the best paper is selected annually based on four criteria: Originality, Technical Content, Impact, and Presentation.
About the paper
At the time of publication, the paper reported the highest transmission bandwidth of almost 17 THz using three different wavelengths bands and optimizing the signal for each band through geometric shaping. This resulted in the transmission of 660 × 25 GBd channels over 40 km with the highest throughput of over 178Tbit/s.
