Academics Maxwell Donald (Chemical Engineering) and Eric Crook (Biochemistry) had the initial vision of Biochemical Engineering as a discipline in its own right at UCL. They were co-founders with Elmer Gaden (Columbia University) of the journal Biotechnology and Bioengineering in 1959.
