The PETRAS National Centre of Excellence for IoT Systems Cybersecurity announced seven new research projects funded through its Internal Strategic Projects and Engagement Fund (ISPEF).
Dr Matt Richie, Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE), will oversee the PETRAS ISPEF project entitled ‘SDRIOTSS 2’. The project aims to develop directly from the previous funded PETRAS SDRIOTSS project and is an operational live technology demonstrator system that can provide real time spectrum situational awareness of the Internet of Things(IoT) devices. Collaborations with the project partners Defence, Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Alan Turing Institute (ATI) will provide both real world scenarios and end user feedback, as well as mentoring, on machine learning RF applications.
These innovative research projects will look to tackle social and technical challenges of emerging technologies and provide technology solutions for the betterment of society and the UK economy, as well as identify potential issues and risks across sectors, ultimately helping to ensure the UK is a safer and more prosperous place.
Dr Matt Richie states:
Being aware of the presence of Radio Frequency (RF) signals from Internet of Things (IoT) devices is vital as part of cyber security. Without knowing what signals are present you may be letting your infrastructure become vulnerable to new means of cyber attack. Our new project will build a technology demonstrator that uses cutting edge RF hardware to capture these signals and make users aware of their parameters and location.

PETRAS’s work considers issues of Privacy, Ethics, Trust, Reliability, Acceptability, Trust and Security as they apply to IoT systems and networks, as well as associated technologies at the edge, such as AI and Machine Learning.
Solutions orientated projects include those with aims ranging from supporting vulnerable groups such as the elderly, to providing privacy preserving methods for healthcare providers, as well as efficiency savings in ‘smart’ shipping ports.
