Join the Global Engineering Design Studio.

20 January 2022

UCL, along with McMaster McGill University, Monash University, University of Auckland, University of Southern California, University of Toronto, have partnered to deliver the Global Engineering Design Studio (GEDS) program.

Text on image reads: "Global Engineering Design Studio. An eight-week, 100% virtual program where you can propose innovative solutions to pressing global issues. Learn more about the program (February 2022): eng.mcmaster.ca/geds"

What is the Global Engineering Design Studio?

The goal of GEDS is to bring talented and engaged engineering undergraduate students from different parts of the world to work on some of our global society’s highest priority challenges. This year, GEDS will focus on Sustainable Cities and Communities – UN Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11. Design teams consisting of students from different universities with the guidance mentors and faculty will apply human-centred design approaches to further focus on one of three more specific challenges:

  •  How can we preserve or improve the quality of our water in critical areas?  (also intersecting with SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation)
  •  How might we preserve our biodiversity? (also intersecting with SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure)
  • How might we navigate traffic congestion as populations in urban settings surge? (also intersecting with SDG 15: Life on Land)

Unique to GEDS, the challenge areas will offer every student the opportunity to learn about global perspectives from their peers on these essential topics.

The program is the result of a strategic collaboration among some of the most progressive and innovative faculties and schools of engineering in the world.

You can find more information on the Global Engineering Design Studio on the McMaster University website.

Why should I apply?

The Global Engineering Design Studio (GEDS) is a fantastic opportunity to:

  • Engage in a design project focused on a real-world problem and present an innovative solution that contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
  • Apply your disciplinary knowledge through the process of human-centred design and exercise skills that employers look for such as communication, teamwork,  project management, entrepreneurship, leadership, and problem-solving.
  • Collaborate with peers and colleagues from across the world and learn about what sustainability looks like on a global scale.

How do I take part?

UCL Engineering undergraduate students can now apply to take part in the Global Engineering Design Studio. Unfortunately, first-year undergraduate students cannot take part in the Design Studio.

Students will be assigned international teams and take part in 4-hours workshops each weekend over 8 weeks, starting on Saturday 19 February 2022.

Apply now to take part in the Global Engineering Design Studio (UCL Engineering Students only)

Deadline for applications: 8 February 2022 at noon (GMT).
