Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) PhD student Aakanksha Sud has been awarded the prestigious Royal Society JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, for research that could lead to faster and more energy-efficient storage devices.
The award entitles early-stage scientists from UK to conduct research in Japan. It is funded by the Japan Society for the promotion of Science (JSPS) and allows the Fellows to conduct cooperative research in the field of Sciences, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) with leading research institutes in Japan.
On receiving the award, Aakanksha stated:
I am extremely delighted and grateful to receive this prestigious fellowship which enables me to pursue my research career. I am thankful to my supervisor Dr Kurebayashi, for his all his guidance and advice throughout my PhD journey and encouraging me to work on challenging projects, as well as my wonderful colleagues in the Spin Group and all the staff in EEE and LCN who have also been so supportive. I feel fortunate to study at UCL and for the opportunity to work with so many talented researchers in UK and abroad.
In this fellowship, Aakanksha will be studying novel synthetic nano-magnets, optimizing its properties that are desirable for applications including magnetic-field sensing and magnetic random access memory (MRAM). The aim is to exquisitely control its magnetic parameters with an attempt to improve its performance, which could have potentially revolutionary impact on the research about storage devices.
