The IChemE Global Awards 2019 celebrate outstanding achievement by chemical, biochemical and process engineers and the material impact they are having on providing solutions to major issues that society is facing across the world today. The Business Start-Up Award is related to the project of continuous graphene manufacturing using microwave. This project makes it commercially feasible to continuously exfoliate low-cost graphite into processable single-layer graphene flakes in a large scale by tens seconds microwave technology whilst still maintaining the ideal atomic graphitic surface structure, promising a multi-million market and wining the favour of many investors.
Prof Junwang (John) Tang was also shortlisted in the Oil and Gas category, together with these giant oil companies, eg, ExxonMobil Chemicals Ltd, Fluor UK, Haldor Topsøe A/S in Denmark and Saudi Aramco in Saudi Arabia. This project, which was finally awarded highly competitive entry in the Oil and Gas category, focuses on the conversion of methane into transportable liquid fuels (e.g. ethanol) and high-value chemicals with extremely high selectivity by photocatalysis operated under ambient conditions.
