With a range of presentations that varied from the theatrical to the slightly more straight-forward, the six groups completing this year’s first engineering challenge were judged by a panel of three academics as well as their peers. Students voted on other groups’ presentations using an app, contributing to the final decision of the judging panel.
The winner of the challenge was announced at the end of the day, with the ‘2O Inc.’ team receiving an engraved award for their proposal to develop a systematic method to interpret medical conditions in both mothers and newborns that could be symptomatic of, or lead to, birth asphyxia. The winning team included Christoph Davis, Mihnea Dumitrescu, Jonathan de Souza Holt, Jia Ying Rachel Tan and Caterina Vanelli Coralli. The team was awarded first place for their research and proposal as well as the unique presentation format, set as a broadcast news interview.
Runners-up were Mikhail Shabalin, Mingya Alexa Gong, Jia Yi Huang, Liyi Tan in the ‘HAEM’ team, who devised diagnostic equipment/method to identify birth asphyxia in newborns.
