An outstanding student from the Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering is celebrating winning three prizes for his public outreach activities.

Lorenzo Molinari, who is studying for the MEng in Biomedical Engineering, has won awards for engineering engagement, volunteering, and a special commendation for his work with Engineers without Borders UCL.

At the Provost’s Engineering Engagement Awards, awarded by the UCL Engineering Faculty, Lorenzo won the prize for UCL Engineering Engager of the Year for his outstanding contribution in engineering engagement activities. 

Lorenzo created a series of workshops based on the Integrated Engineering Concept of the Design Cycle, taking young people through each step of the design cycle and applying critical thinking and teamwork skills, along with creativity, to the design of innovative solutions. 

He and his team visited schools and institutions all around the UK with a view to creating sustainable engagement, building a connection with the students through regular visits and enthusing them to pursue an Engineering career.

Lorenzo was also awarded the 'Volunteering Society of the Year' award, beating more than 200 other societies, for his work with Engineers without Borders UCL inspiring young people to love science, and demonstrating that STEM subjects are for everyone, regardless of gender, religion, sexuality and socio-economic background.

The Volunteering Coordinator at the London Central Mosque, one of the institutions Lorenzo and his team visited, comments:

The Outreach Team has had an incredible impact on our students. This is the second time they have visited us (once last year and twice this time around) and they delivered a new, exciting workshop each time. Their team-building activity was such a success that we have incorporated variations of it into our programme ever since. However, it was the design project that really inspired our students to consider the ways in which engineering could be used to tackle the grand challenges of the 21st century and empowered them to address the solution from its social, economic and political dimensions. They have a better appreciation for the places engineering can take them. Lorenzo also scooped a commendation from Students' Union UCL for two years of dedicated service with Engineers without Borders.
