The TINs are multidisciplinary networks, connecting research in major therapeutic modalities from across UCL and partner NIHR Biomedical Research Centres. Their purpose is to maximise the translation of disease-related research into high-quality therapeutic interventions quickly and efficiently for the benefit of patients.  The TINs are hosted by the Translational Research Office (TRO), which provides support for translational research, industrial partnerships and drug discovery.

 

The TINs include:

  • Cell, Gene and Regenerative Medicines
  • Biologics
  • Small Molecule
  • Repurposing
  • Devices
  • Diagnostics

The Cell, Gene and Regenerative Medicines network is the longest-established and has already achieved strong results in promoting the extensive capabilities of the community, sharing expertise and mobilising around strategic issues. The TRO is optimistic that the other networks will mirror its success.

 

Dr Rebecca Shipley, Director of the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering (IHE), leads the Devices and Diagnostics TINs. Speaking at the event, Becky explained how the IHE is “pioneering healthcare technologies which improve the lives of patients across the globe”.

 

The IHE and Wellcome/EPSRC Centre for Interventional and Surgical Sciences (WEISS) will host the Devices and Diagnostics networks and provide the infrastructure for translating research into the clinic. The IHE will leverage its already-established pipeline for producing the next generation of healthcare innovations. The networks’ short-term goals include creating a workflow for the design and development of medical devices as well as reinforcing functional lines with UCL Partner Hospitals.

 

The evening concluded with networking drinks, giving attendees an opportunity to meet colleagues and spark collaborations. Collaboration is integral to UCL’s success and we are continually looking to develop new multidisciplinary alliances with patient-centric organisations.
