Two departmental finalists in the Faculty's Best Summer Studentship Project

The department had two of the five students competing for the best project of the Faculty’s EPSRC and Undergraduate Research Opportunities Scheme (UROS) summer studentships.

The students who were awarded studentships worked together with departmental researchers during the summer of 2016 and submitted a report of their work at the end. Based on these reports, the top five students from throughout the Faculty were selected to present their projects to a panel and to a Faculty audience of researchers on 22 March.

Third year students Melvin Ting and Fabian Byhlen were up against each other, as well as three other Faculty students, presenting work they conducted with Dr Yazaydin (Byhlen) and Dr Guldin (Ting).

In the end the best project award went to a mechanical engineering student, but both Fabian and Melvin delivered excellent presentations.

Melvin Ting: "I am incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity of working alongside Dr Guldin and his research team. Participating in cutting edge research and developing a certain degree of expertise in what I initially thought was a daunting field were two very fulfilling experiences I felt throughout the course of the UROS. The UROS has undoubtedly fortified my ambitions to pursue a future career in academia."

Fabian Byhlen: "I spent the summer between my second and third year doing experimental research where I developed a drug delivery system using nanoporous materials. It was a great opportunity to learn many transferable skills as well as being mentored by some of the top researchers in the field. This eye-opening experience spurred my interest in research further and prompted me to pursue a PhD upon graduation."

The summer studentships are part of the Faculty’s commitment to UCL’s Connected Curriculum whereby we aim to involve students at all levels in the cutting edge research taking place within departments.
