Dr Mark Carver is a senior and highly respected figure in the UK bioindustry sector. He has been a strong supporter of the UCL Department of Biochemical Engineering throughput his career in terms of providing advice on our research and educational activities, contributing expert lectures and directly supporting doctoral research programmes. He made a very strong contribution to developing our recently awarded EPSRC Manufacturing Hub in Targeted Healthcare and was the industrial representative on the interview panel.
Mark has had a distinguished career in the biopharmaceutical industry. He was Chief Scientific Officer and Quality Director of Avecia Biologics and subsequently MSD Biologics (2007-2010) establishing one of the UK’s few FDA licensed manufacturing facilities for biologic medicines. He was Senior Vice-President Research, Development and Innovation for Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies from 2011 until his retirement in 2016. Throughout his career Mark he has been heavily involved with the UK Research Councils helping establish and run the BBSRC/EPSRC Bioprocess Research Industry Club. He is currently a member of the BBSRC Strategic Advisory Panel on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioenergy and has recently become Chair of the UK BioIndustry Association Science and Innovation Advisory Committee.
Following Mark’s recent retirement the Department is seeking to develop a strategic relationship with Mark and benefit from his increased input. He has already agreed to Chair the Management Committee of our new EPSRC Manufacturing Hub and will become a member of the Department’s Strategic Advisory Board. He will help mentor junior academic staff in their research bidding activity, e.g. in alignment to industry, and provide careers advice to students within our EPSRC Centres for Doctoral Training.
