Part of the exhibition profiles 24 women from across the university who inspire those around them, with six of the 24 coming from UCL Engineering.

A collaboration between the Institute for Women’s Health, The Girl at The Door and the UCL Equalities and Diversity team, the exhibition features artwork exploring the history of women at UCL from artist Kristina Clackson-Bonnington. In 1878, UCL became the first university in England to admit women on equal terms with men, with the artwork focusing on what roles and spaces the first women occupied, and how this has changed since 1878.

Chosen from among 200 nominations, the photographs profiling 24 women working and studying across the university celebrate the diversity of UCL’s female staff and students as well as UCL’s achievements in being awarded an institutional Athena SWAN Silver Award.

The six women from UCL Engineering who were chosen for the final exhibition are:

  • Dr Muna Elmi – Research Associate from UCL Computer Science
  • Dr Zoe Laughlin – Creative Director of the Institute of Making
  • Dr Elpida Makrygianni – Engineering Education Developer & Coordinator in UCL Engineering
  • Dr Priti Parikh – Lecturer from UCL Civil, Environmental & Geomatic Engineering
  • Thao Phan – Undergraduate student from UCL School of Management
  • Professor Angela Sasse – Professor from UCL Computer Science

The exhibition was officially opened on Wednesday 9th March by the UCL President and Provost Professor Michael Arthur. The UCL Equalities and Diversities team also produced an exhibition booklet (PDF) highlighting the impact of every single nominee on colleagues and students.

Professor Nigel Titchener-Hooker,  Dean of the UCL Faculty of Engineering Sciences, said:

“This event provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the wide spectrum of successes our women engineers have achieved. Each provides an inspiring vision of personal achievement of which we should all be proud”.
