Unveiling Terahertz Electromagnetic Fields
Abstract
In this Inaugural Lecture, Oleg will explore his research journey in the evolving field of ultra-fast photonics, with a particular focus on terahertz (THz) technology. Once a niche area of study, THz photonics has grown rapidly over the past two decades and now holds a central position in future developments in photonics and electronics. It enables a wide range of applications - from high-speed wireless communications to advanced sensing and spectroscopy, as well as biomedical and industrial imaging.
He will discuss the development of THz near-field microscopy, a key technique that has helped visualise and better understand THz electromagnetic fields at sub-wavelength scales. This work has been instrumental in uncovering new physical phenomena and advancing THz device technology. The lecture will chart the milestones and challenges of working at the forefront of this transformative field and look ahead to future possibilities for THz science and its practical impact across disciplines.
Professor Oleg Mitrofanov
Professor Oleg Mitrofanov is a Professor of Terahertz Photonics at UCL’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering and a leading expert in ultra-fast optical and THz technologies. His research lies at the intersection of photonics, nanotechnology, and electromagnetic wave science, with a focus on developing imaging techniques that enable the characterisation of materials and devices at unprecedented spatial and temporal resolution.
Professor Mitrofanov has played a pioneering role in advancing THz near-field microscopy and has contributed significantly to expanding the application of THz waves in scientific and industrial domains. His work has been supported by major research grants from UKRI and the European Commission, and he collaborates widely with international partners across academia and industry.
