Spring into STEM| Learning from Nature to Manufacture Sustainable Materials | Virtual Lecture Series
Did you know we can engineer new materials to address global challenges in healthcare, renewable energy or the environment by learning from natural structures such as silk webs, seashells or bones? Join Dr Diego López Barreiro to explore how research in design, manufacturing, computation and biotechnology is facilitating the next generation of sustainable materials.
In this talk, we will discuss how to use structural protein biopolymers from Nature (e.g., elastin, collagen, silk) to manufacture advanced materials that display impressive strength, stimuli-responsiveness or elasticity. We will learn how to obtain structural polymers from natural sources and in bioreactors, and how to tailor the properties of materials derived from them with applications in fields like biomedicine, using both experimentation and computational simulations.
