Spring into STEM: Security and Algorithmic Trustworthiness in the Internet of Medical Things

The world of medical devices is changing with the rise in digital healthcare. The connected, intelligent medical devices that make up the IoMT come in a variety of forms, including implantables such as pacemakers or spinal cord stimulators, smart devices at the point of care such as IV pumps, and software as a medical device (SaMD) such as radiological imaging solutions based on machine learning. While promising, these devices also raise several cybersecurity, data quality, and algorithmic integrity concerns for patient safety and the delivery of reliable, responsible healthcare.

This lecture will provide examples of emerging cybersecurity vulnerabilities and algorithmic integrity issues in the IoMT. It will then discuss how these critical issues challenge existing medical device regulations and standards and raise concerns for healthcare practitioners providing patient care.

The research presented in this lecture has been conducted in the RegMedTech project funded by the PETRAS National Centre of Excellence in IoT Systems Cybersecurity.
