Spring into STEM: Enhancing MRI for new insights on lung function

This lecture is part of the 2023 Spring into STEM webinars series from UCL Engineering.

MRI scans avoid the radiation exposure of X-rays but currently have limited value for investigating lung health and function. We are developing techniques to overcome these limitations using the inhalation of pure oxygen during the MRI scan. These techniques assess how well your lungs are working by analysing the size and rate of oxygen-induced MRI image changes. Inhaling pure oxygen during an MRI scan is safe and the scans are easy to perform in hospital settings, giving oxygen-inhaled lung MRI exciting translational potential for clinical care. This talk will describe the rich information concealed within the oxygen-inhaled lung MRI scans and will discuss our current work to advance the technique.

About the speaker

Sarah is a final-year PhD student on the EPSRC i4Health CDT, within UCL Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering. Sarah is developing methods to assess lung function using oxygen-enhanced MRI (OE-MRI) - a technique involving the inhalation of pure oxygen during an MRI scan.
