China Induction for 1st Year Engineering Students
Studying at UCL means stepping into a melting pot of cultures, sub-cultures, values, communication, and work styles. Many of us will encounter situations in our day-to-day activities that are impacted by cultural differences. This, in turn, affects the way we interact with, and how we show up as members of the UCL community. So it is my pleasure to invite you to a workshop, in its second year of running, which will help us explore the three primary needs of intercultural competence, relationship building, and teamwork for student success. We will learn skills immediately applicable to activities on and off-campus. Year 1 undergraduate students from the Faculty of Engineering are encouraged to participate.
Sessions 1: Promoting Cultural Competence
In the first session “Promoting Cultural Competence”, we will engage in practical dialogue around specific intercultural communication issues and situations, and we will identify and develop tools for appropriate intercultural practices. This session prepares you to:
• Identify your own cultural preferences and have the tools to understand the preferences of others
• Implement strategies for working effectively across cultural difference

Futher Sessions
There are three parts to the workshop. The second session “Networking Social: Connect, Reflect, and Build Confidence” will be an interactive social session which is all making connections with others. This will take place in the week beginning Monday 3rd October.
During Term 2, the third session “Team-Based Problem-Solving” will be again a participant-focused opportunity to practice teamwork and build confidence working with new people, alongside a discussion on employability.
Details of these sessions will be announced shortly.
About China Induction
First launched at the Faculty of Engineering in 2021, the China Induction program was designed to prepare new students from China for their international education and beyond. In 2022, this induction has been upgraded to achieve maximum student outcome success, with support of staff from Engineering EDI, Engineering Careers, and Integrated Engineering Programme (IEP).
