Spring into STEM: What are brains made of?

In this short lecture, we take a look at imaging the electromagnetic properties of the brain. How well it conducts, where the iron and calcium is stored, in short, what it is made of. Medical imaging which you have never seen before, using an MRI scanner to see not what your insides look like, but rather what you are made of! At the end of this lecture you’ll have some understanding of how electromagnetic waves interact with complex tissue properties, and how we can use that to actually gain insights not previously possible.
About the speaker
Patrick Fuchs is a post-doctoral research fellow in the magnetic resonance imaging group, working on imaging the brain, specifically in the context of healthy ageing, Alzheimer and dementia. His interests are electromagnetic properties, inverse problems and modelling complex physics.
