Chemical Engineering is an applied subject and the chemical engineering design elements of the degree programme give students the opportunity to apply the fundamental knowledge they are gaining in their degree to create a system, process, product or plant to meet identified and industrially relevant needs. Central to chemical engineering design undertaken here at UCL, is the concept of sustainability, whereby, students are deliberate about their processes being environmentally and socially, with a particular focus on safety, sustainable. At every stage of the design project, key design decisions are viewed through the prism of sustainability including: the feedstock or raw materials chosen, the end product recommended, the final process route adopted, the detailed design of major process equipment, and the safety implications for the process. In this taster lecture we will go through some examples of how students embed sustainability into the various stages of their design of a chemical plant.
Our taster lectures will give you a chance to find out about the subjects we teach and research, you’ll be able to meet our lecturers and researchers and you can put your questions to the team. We look forward to welcoming you.
