Taster Lecture - Nanoscale-Engineering for Energy Storage

Abstract:
The threat of climate change to the planet is the problem of our age and will most likely continue to be a problem in our future. The solution to climate change requires radical shifts in the way energy is produced and used, for example, shifting from fossil fuels to renewable energy. However, this requires new technologies to utilise and store intermittent energy sources. One emerging technology is fuel cells, which convert hydrogen gas and oxygen efficiently into energy with water being the only by-product. This talk gives an overview of the fundamentals of fuel cells, why they are needed, how they work, their limitations and their current commercial success. We also discuss the cutting-edge research being done at UCL that is advancing this technology, helping it spread into the wider world where it can make a difference to our future.
