POSTPONED: Future frameworks for international collaboration in research & innovation

The UK’s involvement in previous EU research and innovation programmes has been valued highly. But the shape of EU programmes is changing and the UK is no longer a member of the EU. Whatever the outcome of future negotiations between the EU and the UK, this is a good time to reflect on future arrangement and opportunities for international collaboration globally.
Against that background, the then Science Minister commissioned advice on future frameworks for international collaboration. Professor Sir Adrian Smith (Director of the Alan Turing Institute and former Vice Chancellor of the University of London) and Professor Graeme Reid submitted their advice in July 2019. The Government published the Smith-Reid Report towards the end of 2019. Graeme will summarise the findings in the report and describe issues and decisions on research and innovation that need to be addressed as EU negotiations proceed during 2020.
Graeme will encourage questions from the audience after his presentation. The event will be followed by a networking and drinks reception.

Professor Graeme Reid
Chair of Science and Research Policy
UCL
Professor Graeme Reid is Chair of Science and Research Policy at University College London. He is a member of the Council of Research England.
He has spent most of his career at the interface between science and Government, having worked in the Business Department, the Cabinet Office and HM Treasury and before moving to UCL.
Graeme was specialist advisor to the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee during their extensive inquiries into Brexit and, subsequently, industrial strategy. He is a member of the Government’s High Level Group on EU Exit, Universities, Research and Innovation. He led research and innovation policy reviews for the Scottish Funding Council and the Welsh Government. Sir Adrian Smith and Graeme advised the UK science minister on frameworks for international collaboration – the UK Government published their report in November 2019.
Graeme is Chair of the Campaign for Science and Engineering, a Trustee of the Association of Medical Research Charities and strategic advisor to the National Centre for Universities and Business.
He began his career at the National Engineering Laboratory. He has a BSc in Physics and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Fellow of the Institute of Physics, Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology and a Chartered Engineer.
