Taster lecture: Combating Global Warming: Is CCS the Magic Bullet

Abstract:
Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions resulting from human activities such as power plants, industry and transport are by far the largest contributors to Global Warming. To fulfil the Paris Agreement adopted by nearly every nation in the world to limit the average global temperature increase to no more than 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels, major reductions in CO2 emissions are required.
Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) involves capturing CO2 from industrial emitters and fossil fuel power plants and transporting it using high-pressure pipelines for long-term geological storage. It is widely considered that CCS has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 30% without significantly affecting industrial activity.
This presentation provides an overview of CCS, the technical, environmental and economic challenges that must be overcome in order to make it a commercial reality. The presentation also covers highlights of the world leading research in this field coordinated by UCL Chemical Engineering involving collaboration between 10 European countries, Canada, China and USA.

He teaches Advanced Safety and Loss Prevention to the final year undergraduate and MSc students. His main research interest is in the area of Carbon Capture and Storage where he leads several multinational projects. One of these, the CO2QUEST project was awarded the Institution of Chemical Engineering Highly Commended 2016 Global Process Safety Prize. He acts as consultant to industry and is a lead author of the Trans-European CO2 Pipeline Infrastructure Roadmap submitted to the European Parliament.
