Balancing STEMM careers with media and outreach

Dr Kevin J Fong OBE

Kevin Fong is an experienced science communicator who has worked on several TV documentaries including Horizon and Extreme A&E. Like many others, Fong started out in a STEMM career with a fascination for space. Now a Consultant Anaesthetist at UCLH, he also founded the UCL Centre for Altitude, Space and Extreme environment physiology (CASE) in 2000. Find out how he balances his interests in medicine, space, and communications.

Prof Sarah Bell

Sarah Bell is a Professor of Environmental Engineering at the Bartlett, and an EPSRC Living With Environmental Change Research Fellow. She investigates bottom-up approaches to community engagement in infrastructure provision, with a particular expertise in urban water systems. Her latest book, “Urban Water Sustainability: Constructing Infrastructure for Cities and Nature”, was published in 2018 by Routledge.

Prof Mark Miodownik

Mark Miodownik writes a column in The Observer, regularly presents programmes for the BBC, and has won awards for his work in outreach and public engagement with science. A materials scientist and Professor of Materials & Society at UCL Mechanical Engineering, Miodownik successfully pursues his passion for research and academic pursuits alongside his work in public engagement and media.
