In this talk, Dr. Simone Stumpf from City, University of London will provide an overview of previous work and a current project that investigates smart heating systems.
About
We are currently on the cusp of a revolution in smart technologies using Artificial Intelligence or complex algorithmic decision-making being integrated into everyday life. It has been shown that users need to understand how an intelligent system works in order to use it effectively, promote positive attitudes towards the system, increase their trust in the system’s decisions, and to gain a sense of controllability, yet so far most of these systems are like black boxes and not at all transparent. My research has focused on providing explanations – textual and graphical – of the behaviour of intelligent systems and getting feedback for interactive machine learning. In this talk I will provide an overview of previous work and a current project that investigates smart heating systems.

Dr. Simone Stumpf is a Senior Lecturer at City, University of London, where she researches designing end-user interactions with intelligent systems. Her current projects includes designing user interfaces for smart heating systems and smart home self-care systems for people with dementia or Parkinson’s disease. She is also interested in personal information management and end-user development to empower all users to use intelligent machines effectively.
