The Inaugural Lecture of Professor Elaine Pimentel
The Inaugural Lecture of Professor Elaine Pimentel: Proofs, Meaning, and Inclusion - 14 May 2026.
About Elaine Pimentel’s Inaugural Lecture
What does it mean to do logic today and why does it matter beyond academia? In this lecture, Elaine explores an ecumenical approach to logic, and how it shapes her work on proofs, meaning, and automated reasoning.
Alongside this, Elaine reflects on how outreach and education have influenced hre understanding of the field, reinforcing the need for a more inclusive and accessible discipline.
This is a personal account of logic as a living practice, connecting ideas, computation, communities, and society.
About Elaine
Elaine Pimentel is Professor of Logic and Computation in the Department of Computer Science at UCL. She also serves as the department’s Schools Outreach Lead, Treasurer of ACM SIGLOG, and Chair of the Latin American Committee of the Association for Symbolic Logic. She chairs the steering committees of TABLEAUX and LFMTP and is a former President and Treasurer of the Brazilian Logic Society.
Her research lies in logic and proof theory, with a focus on the specification and verification of concurrent, computational and logical systems, as well as game semantics, ecumenical logics and proof systems for automated reasoning. She coordinates the ECUMENICAL research project.
Elaine is committed to advancing diversity and inclusion in academia. She leads the outreach project POTIMÁTICAS, which encourages girls to pursue Mathematics and Computer Science, and runs the platform Mathematics: feminine noun.
She also co-founded the Brazilian Female Logicians collective, which has led initiatives such as Logic and Representativeness. At UCL, she contributes to the Athena SWAN programme, drawing on her international experience to support equality and inclusion.
