Projects and Fieldwork
The students enrolled in the MSc in Engineering for International Development will have the enriching opportunity to embark on a technical visit to the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT). Nestled in the picturesque Welsh countryside, CAT stands as a pioneering institution at the forefront of sustainable technology and eco-friendly practices.
During this visit, our students will immerse themselves in a hands-on learning experience, exploring cutting-edge solutions for a more sustainable future. From renewable energy systems to innovative water management strategies, the visit to CAT will provide invaluable insights into practical applications of engineering in the realm of international development. Engaging with experts and witnessing sustainable technologies in action, our students will leave CAT inspired, and equipped with a deeper understanding of how their engineering skills can contribute to addressing global challenges. Students are required to provide a contribution of £300 towards the total costs of travel and subsistence.
As part of the module on Infrastructure Systems for the Developing World, our students will take on the Engineers Without Borders Design Challenge. This transformative group project will empower our students to apply their engineering expertise to real-world issues. Collaborating with peers, they will tackle challenges presented by the Engineering for People Design Challenge, organized by Engineers Without Borders.
From conceptualization to implementation, our students will engage in innovative problem-solving, addressing pressing global issues in areas such as water supply, sanitation, energy, buildings, and transportation. The experience not only sharpens their technical skills but also fosters a deep understanding of the social and environmental dimensions of engineering solutions. Through this impactful group project, our students will exemplify their commitment to becoming change agents, ready to contribute meaningfully to international development through engineering innovation.
