Urban Sustainability and Resilience MRes + EngD
This programme provides students with the opportunity to tackle a challenging research problem identified by industry as critical to our urban environment.

The EngD programme has two key themes: sustainability and resilience. We focus on reducing the impact of our cities on ecological systems (air, water, food chains) whilst improving the quality of daily lives and coping with the problems of population growth and changing demographics, such as an ageing society. We are concerned with engineering systems and developing technologies that will increase the resilience of our urban systems (education, health, transport, water, financial, governance) and the infrastructure that supports them (roads, communications networks, buildings) to shocks arising from natural, economic and technological hazards.

Please note, all module choices are subject to space on modules, timetabling constraints and the approval of the relevant module tutor and the programme director.
Full-time students take the MRes over one year. Part-time students take the MRes over two years.
The MRes consists of one compulsory taught module (15 credits), one optional research skills module selected from an approved list (15 credits), two elective modules (30 credits) and a research project (120 credits).

- Spatial Analysis and Geocomputation (CEGE0097)
- Researcher Professional Development (EDUCGE02)
Students choose two elective modules, totalling 30 credits. An elective module is any UCL Master's level module. Choices are subject to the programme director's approval. Visit the UCL Module Catalogue for further information (selecting FHEQ Level 7 in the filter).
Dissertation/research projectAll students undertake an independent research project, which culminates in a dissertation of up to 20,000 words, and produce a presentation to be delivered at a dedicated event in September. This is worth 120 credits.
Full-time students take the EngD over three years. Part-time students take the EngD over five years. Please get in touch with Prof Titheridge to discuss workloads, programme structure and progression timing if you are considering the part-time route.
Students will take an additional four graduate-level taught modules (60 credits) including a project management module, a resilience module and a sustainability module (each worth 15 credits and selected from approved lists).
Dissertation/report- EngD progression at the end of year two: students produce a report of 5,000-10,000-words
- EngD thesis: students produce a thesis of maximum length 100,000 words
