A complementary group with expertise in laboratory and field testing, constitutive modelling and numerical analysis, from micromechanical up to continuum approaches.
About
UCL Geotechnics Group is a group of five academic staff with complementary skills and 20 PhD students. The group is highly experienced in advanced equipment for single element testing, micromechanics and particle characterisation, including an inter-particle loading apparatus that is unique in the world. We also have expertise in numerical modelling of soils, using discrete element model (DEM) and continuum approaches for static and dynamic problems, whilst meshfree simulations are used for high strain regimes.
We have a wide range of research interests. Current areas of research are: contaminated soils and tailings, soil improvement including the use of waste materials, micromechanics of clays, sands and railway ballast, DEM modelling of piles, discrete modelling of clays, field instrumentation and the use of new technologies to aid asset management.
